ในเมืองไทยเราแต่เดิมเด็กไทยเฉพาะเด็กผู้ชายจะอาศัยวัดเป็นที่เรียน โดยพระภิกษุเป็นผู้สอนหนังสือรวมทั้งวิชาความรู้ต่าง ๆ ให้ ในกาลสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ช่วงรัชสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๓ ราวเกือบสองร้อยปีมีการบันทึกตำรายารวมทั้งวิชาความรู้ต่าง ๆ ตามผนังวัดเชตุพนวิมลมังคลาราม หรือชาวบ้านเรียกว่า วัดโพธิ์ ซึ่งกล่าวได้ว่าเป็นโรงเรียนแห่งแรกของชาวสยาม ในกาลสมัยต่อมาในรัชกาลที่ ๕ ปลายรัชสมัยต่อเนื่องมาในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๖ เกิดมหาวิทยาลั่ยแห่งแรกของไทยคือ มหาวิทยาลัยจุฬาลงกรณ์ ต่อมาราวสามสิบปีเกิดมหาวิทยาลัยเปิดแห่งแรกของเมืองไทยคือ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์และการเมือง ต่อมาเปลี่ยนระบบเป็นระบบมหาวิทยาลัยปิด และราวสิบปีต่อมาเกิดมหาวิทยาลัยรามคำแหง ซึ่งในปัจจุบันยังคงเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเปิดในระบบเก่า และราวสิบปีต่อมาเกิดเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยสุโขทัยธรรมาธิราช ซึ่งนับว่าเป็นมหาวิทยาลัยเปิดระบบใหม่ In Thailand in the past, Thai children always have no chance for being a student, many boys actually learned in the temple and a monk be a teacher.
